Directory of State Parks
List of Montana State Parks
THE PICNIC PLACEMAT
Montana State Park System is divided into seven areas.  In the Eastern part of the
State emphasis is placed on preserving the historical sites and heritage of the Native
Americans who once roamed the prairies.  The greatest concentration of State Parks
is in the western part where you will find majestic mountains, pristine lakes, and
historical sites going back to the gold rush days.
AREA 1 - - Mountains, forests, and lakes are the main emphasis of this Northwest area.
Tranquil camping areas are nestled in the woods or along the shores of the many
lakes.  This area is known for wildlife as well as the wide variety of flora and fauna.

AREA 2 - - The booming mining industry of the past is brought to life in some of the
State Parks in this area.  You will also find lakes and rivers for all your  water
activities.  Hiking, boating and camping as well as historical sites will make this area
ideal for a day or a vacation.

AREA 3 - - From the headwaters of the Missouri River, to the Lewis and Clark Caverns,
to a single acre State Park, you will find something of interest for everyone.

AREA 4 - - There are several day use State Parks in this Area.  Rich in the history of
Lewis and Clark you will be able to retrace their footsteps as they journeyed toward
the coast.  There are several lakes in the area that have State Park facilities.

AREA 5 - - Prairie dogs and Indian heritage play the major roles in this area as well as
the very popular Hunter State Park recreation area.

AREA 6 - - There is only one State Park in the area and it is limited to day use only.
Brush Lake State Park is in a plains area of the state with very limited facilities.

AREA 7 - - All your favorite outdoor activities can be found in this area.  Fishing,
camping, swimming, hiking and more.  Rich in the history of the conflicts between the
American Indians and the U.S. Army
